It's happening! Derby 2025 is set for January 31st. In many ways, it's the pinnacle of the Cub Scout annual adventures, at least the indoor ones - it's all down hill after this.
The Derby consists of many heats with every car racing several times. Results are based on average race times over the evening.
While it depends on the number of racers, the event can last about 2 hours or more. It's a ton of fun, so bring siblings if you want. There will be trophies!
These are essentially the same as the national Scouting America rules.
All cars must pass the following inspection to qualify for the race:
Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit. Additional wheels can be purchased separately.
Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.
The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.
Cars from previous years are not eligable to race again.
Let your scout do as much as possible when it comes to making their car! We'll have a Cut Night on January 6th, 7pm, where the scouts can choose a template (i.e. like rocket car, shark car, etc) and one of our resident woodworkers will do the basic cuts on a band saw. You can then go paint it, and add more details later.
